Can Sweat Spread Coronavirus?
It’s no secret that the last few months have been anything but normal. With the sweeping effects of a global pandemic, coronavirus has truly affected every part of life as we knew it. One of the biggest questions surrounding coronavirus has consistently been, “How is it spread?” From the beginning, this was the concern on the top of everyone’s mind. Can surfaces spread coronavirus? Does touch spread coronavirus? While there are still many unknowns about the virus, a lot more information has become available about how it is spread since it first emerged. As experts in dealing with excessive sweating, it is important for us to stay up to date on all things sweat related, including the very topical and relevant question- can sweat spread coronavirus?
The Answer
So can sweat spread coronavirus? The answer can be semi-complicated, but in short, no. There is no compelling evidence that sweat itself can transmit coronavirus. That doesn’t mean, however, that the transfer of sweat should be totally stress-free. There are other means by which sweat can indirectly transfer Covid-19. If sweat were to come into contact with other virus-laden drops (like mucus or droplets from coughing or sneezing) from someone who is infected with Covid-19, that sweat could then act as a transportation means for the virus. If sweat were to mix with other infected particles like this and then come into contact with another person’s eyes, nose, or mouth, then the infection could very likely be spread.
Where Covid-19 and Sweating Overlap
Another important thing to consider is how much high-risk coronavirus locations and frequent sweat-inducing locations can overlap. For example, some of the most high-risk areas of infection are in highly populated and high touch areas like the subway or gyms. Coincidentally, these are also areas where it is very common for people to be sweating due to overcrowding, exercise, or overall heat levels. So while sweating and coronavirus do not have a causation relationship, they do seem to still correlate with one another. Overall, it is important to remember to practice social distancing measures when interacting in areas like this. While we know sweat itself cannot transmit covid-19, we do know that high-touch surfaces, large crowds, and other bodily fluids can. All of which are common in places like the gym, where sweating is so common.
How to Avoid Coronavirus
Fortunately, there is no reason to be overly concerned with sweat spreading coronavirus. Still, it is important to know what can spread the virus and how to avoid coronavirus in general. Below are some tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe and avoid covid-19.

- This rule is pretty familiar to most people now, but it is important to maintain about 6 feet between you and other people if possible. This primarily pertains to people you do not interact with on a regular basis.

- Wearing a mask has been proven to greatly reduce the spread of coronavirus. For many establishments, it is now a requirement to wear one. Overall, it is better to air on the side of caution when it comes to mask-wearing to protect yourself and others.

Avoid Large Crowds if Possible
- The CDC currently recommends avoiding any and all large crowds if possible.

Avoid Touching Your Face
- It is also good practice to avoid touching your face. Your eyes, nose, and mouth are the areas where coronavirus will enter your body, so keeping your hands away from here can help prevent its spread.
